Understanding LGBTQ+ Terms

Attached is a Glossary of Terms commonly used regarding the LGBTQ+ community. The definitions here are meant to provide a starting point for engaging in inclusive, open and honest conversation for the many identities and orientations of LGBTQ+ individuals. Often these terms can change and this list will be updated to reflect that.

What are Pronouns?

Pronouns are a fundamental aspect of identity used to refer to ourselves or to somebody else. They include she/her, he/him, they/them, she/them, he/them.

Everyone has the right to use gender pronouns that match their personal identity. These pronouns may or may not match their gender expression (how the person dresses, behaves, or looks).

Pronouns are a powerful way of affirming gender identities. If a person chooses to tell you their pronouns when introducing themselves, they are simply letting you know how to refer to them, without you having to make any assumptions. If you make a mistake by misgendering someone, simply apologize and correct yourself.
